Château Cos d’Estournel – THE 2016 HARVEST

ARTICLE -

“I chose Cos d’Estournel for its terroir. I was drawn by the extraordinary nature of the estate. Year after year, I have seen how weather conditions shape each harvest, and how we must adapt to particular events and circumstances. There are no ‘givens’ from one vintage to the next: we constantly face new challenges in our quest to produce the best wine possible. The current vintage is highly atypical and defies comparison to previous years. It will continue to surprise us. I expect it will be a great Cos d’Estournel.”

“The 2016 harvest was long awaited. It had been a very unusual year, starting off cold and rainy and culminating in an extremely hot summer. We were unsure as to how the vine would react. These meteorological contrasts can be felt in the grapes, and should result in a remarkable wine. It is still early, but I believe this vintage will be incredible.”

Aymeric De Gironde, General Manager

“This year, the weather was exceptional. There was no ambiguity whatsoever: the winter was cold, the spring was damp—with just a few days of good weather when the vines were flowering—and the summer was very hot and long. Basically, each season was felt to the extreme. Thanks to their deep roots, our oldest vines were able to fully express their qualities under these unusual circumstances. Grapes were harvested at the height of ripeness and should result in a wine with immense potential.”

Dominique Arangoïts, Technical Director

“I will never forget this year’s harvest! In my 31 years at Cos d’Estournel, I have rarely seen such amazing conditions. Temperatures were superb and the vines were remarkably healthy.”

Michel Sementery, Vineyard Manager
