La Mascaronne, A Singular Heritage

ARTICLE -

An Uncommon Terroir

At La Mascaronne, our commitment to respecting the environment is more than just a philosophy; it is a prerequisite to all that we do. Our estate benefits from such a wealth of biodiversity that we cannot but consider our environment in its entirety. This is what drives us to tend not only to our vines and soils with great care, but also to pay particular attention to our splendid olive trees and centuries-old oak trees.

The terroir is at the heart of La Mascaronne’s remarkable identity. Located on a hillside at the highest point of the estate, the vineyard is mostly composed of clay-limestone soils. On this land, winegrowing has always been driven by a desire to meet the challenges that Nature sets forth by mastering the particularities of each plot, down to the smallest of details, so that our terroir may reveal the best of itself.

At an elevation of three hundred meters, it enjoys an orientation that brings natural ventilation, and a unique microclimate: nighttime temperatures are constantly several degrees cooler than along the shore. This cooler climate, a precious respite in a region like Provence, where winegrowers must constantly adapt to demanding weather conditions, is also brought through the shade generated by the leafy branches of the stately oak trees that surround our vineyard and that of the olive trees that are planted along its plots and paths.

The Agriculture Biologique approach to winegrowing implies a deep respect for the environment and our terroir at all levels and allows us to guarantee the longevity of an exceptional site and its surroundings, as we continue to pursue the exacting methods adopted in the vineyard.

Planted on a single, continuous ring-shaped plot of land, these sixty hectares of vines are treasured. Meticulous preparation of the soils allows roots to reach deep down into the depths of the land, which protects the vine from extreme dryness. Irrigation is thus rendered unnecessary. The estate’s oldest vines are a precious part of its legacy, and they receive the most scrupulous care.
When harvest comes, it takes place in the morning and is carried out entirely by hand. Grapes are harvested at the height of ripeness and sorted first in the vineyard and then upon arriving in the cellars so that only the most qualitative berries are used to craft La Mascaronne’s wines.

Indeed, our underlying philosophy is one of sublimating all that Nature has to offer while adapting to its specificities, to produce exceptional wines as never before.
