The harvest is always a highlight, the culmination of a year’s work for the Cos d’Estournel teams, with the added support of Spanish grape-pickers who come to lend a hand. After a year of patience and decision-making, Dominique Arangoïts, who pulls the strings in both the vineyard and the cellar, kicks things off.
Before dawn, between the rows of vines, loyal grape-pickers from the Andalusian village of Alcalá la Real get to work. For 50 years, they have shared this moment with their companions. This special relationship and unwavering loyalty mean that we can look forward to each harvest with confidence. They all demonstrate the same enthusiasm, and are dressed in the same way: comfortable shoes and trousers, and a tee-shirt matching the famous accessory, which is vital in the hot, late summer sun.
For three weeks, the sky-blue caps are an essential sign of recognition and kinship amongst the extended Cos d’Estournel family.
Once the painstaking work is done, everyone leaves with their precious cap and the feeling of contributing to the birth of a new vintage.
