Some of the names are explicit while others conjure legends or images from the past . . .<\/p>\n

Among the more accessible names, \u201cLe Ch\u00eane,\u201d from the French for \u201coak tree,\u201d is a plot once bordered by a majestic century-old oak tree from which one could admire the Hill of Cos and the ch\u00e2teau. As for \u201cLe Lac,\u201d or \u201cThe Lake,\u201d the plot was named after a nearby body of water, and \u201cLe Ma\u00efs,\u201d from the French for \u201ccorn,\u201d for a nearby field that once provided sustenance for the estate\u2019s laborers. \u201cLes Sapinettes\u201d was named using a familiar word for \u201cspruce,\u201d an allusion to the lovely evergreen trees planted at one end.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”5563″ img_size=”1620×1080″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”5603″ img_size=”1620×1080″ alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator color=”custom” el_width=”30″ accent_color=”#a30b34″][vc_custom_heading text=”Many of the vineyard\u2019s plots bear names that resemble the work of a naturalist writer when they are in reality relics of history…” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_separator color=”custom” el_width=”30″ accent_color=”#a30b34″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”5565″ img_size=”1620×1080″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]A bit further along lies \u201cLa Fontine,\u201d which was fondly named after a nearby fountain where vinegrowers used to quench their thirst during long days in the vineyard. \u201cLe Man\u00e8ge,\u201d from the French for \u201carena,\u201d recalls the mule that used to be driven around the estate\u2019s well to pump water into a system that supplied it to the ch\u00e2teau. \u201cL\u2019Horloge,\u201d or \u201cThe Clock,\u201d speaks to the timepiece that used to hang on the ch\u00e2teau\u2019s central pagoda that the vinegrowers working on the plot used to keep time. Finally, it was on \u201cLes 6 Sadons de la Mule\u201d plot that the mule in question\u2014whose \u201c6 sadons\u201d is still in use today as a unit of measurement for calculating the surface area of vineyards\u2014would rest when it was not at work in the vines.<\/p>\n

Other plots were named for significant moments that were decisive in the lives of the estate\u2019s men and women. This is the case for \u201cLa Parcelle des Femmes,\u201d or \u201cLadies\u2019 Plot,\u201d which was planted in 1915 by the women of Cos d\u2019Estournel during World War I as their male counterparts battled at the front.<\/p>\n

The name of each plot may tell a particular story but how the plots are situated and the selection of grape varieties that are planted in the different parts of the vineyard are the result of meticulous consideration. Located in the middle of a valley in the northern M\u00e9doc between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde Estuary, Cos d\u2019Estournel is situated on the \u201cHill of Pebbles,\u201d the Gascon word for which, \u201cCos,\u201d inspired the name of the estate.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text el_class=”gray-color justify”]It is a location that offers an impressive palette of soil varieties and this naturally occurring wealth inspired the teams to carefully analyze each plot in order to understand the specificities of the different soils. Thanks to a perfect comprehension of the geology of the estate\u2019s terroir, the team is able to select grape varieties and adapt winegrowing techniques to the exposure and soils of each plot, and even to each row of vines. They demonstrate great respect for nature and the environment while remaining faithful to the estate\u2019s past and the site\u2019s rich nomenclature.<\/p>\n
