Audacity and vision

Indeed two of the character traits that best defined Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel. Determined and willing to take risks, the founder of Cos d’Estournel sought throughout his lifetime to sublimate the estate’s terroir. The investments he made—both personal and financial—allowed him to expand the vineyard from fourteen to forty-five hectares within a mere few years. This expansion also meant widened horizons for Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel and the wine he produced would be recognized around the globe. He was particularly interested in opportunities in Asia, something that further extended the estate’s reputation while lending it an exotic touch that continues to characterize its singular identity to this day.

Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel was devoted to building the legendary reputation that he felt his estate deserved. His ambition still resonates among the vines and within the walls of the edifices of Cos d’Estournel, as well as in the hearts of the men and women who are driven by their own zeal for the estate.

As impassioned as his illustrious predecessor, Michel Reybier demonstrates the same exacting care as Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel among the vines and in crafting the wines of the estate.

Today, audacity and vision remain guiding principles for Michel Reybier, owner of Cos d’Estournel since 2000, in every initiative he pursues. As impassioned as his illustrious predecessor, Michel Reybier demonstrates the same exacting care as Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel among the vines and in crafting the wines of the estate. For the former, “it was Cos, and only Cos,” an estate made utterly unique by its remarkable history but also by the quality of its wine, an estate where a nonconformist spirit has resulted in a finely tuned form of excellence.

A spiritual heir of Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, Michel Reybier continues to bring this precious legacy to life as he further develops Cos d’Estournel in a perpetually innovative fashion. The estate’s gravity-based cellars and its peerless œnothèque are stunning examples of this philosophy, as is the in-depth study of its soils that has allowed the teams to ensure that each grape variety is perfectly adapted to the terroir in which it grows.

More than two centuries separate Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel and Michel Reybier but the two men share a common determination and dedication. Both are driven by an altruistic ambition to deliver the best of what the estate has to offer and the desire to be different while respecting the estate’s very unique past. Day in and day out, Cos d’Estournel is defined by its ceaseless quest to bring this daring vision to life, forever ahead of its time.
