Semper Fidelis

Excellence from one generation to the next

Semper Fidelis. Carved into the pediment of the estate’s gate, Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel’s motto symbolizes one of Cos d’Estournel’s most fundamental values. First there was the loyalty of its founder, his loyalty to his estate and its wine, despite the obstacles he would face over time. Today there is the loyalty of ardent entrepreneur Michel Reybier, for whom it has always been “Cos, and only Cos.” And there is also the loyalty of the estate’s devotees, their zeal for a wine that year after year delivers the same complexity and elegance. Guests are not only greeted by the estate’s motto but it accompanies them all throughout their visit. There is a feeling of loyalty, a loyalty to a place and a certain style that inhabits the very buildings, the wines and the men and women of the estate.

At Cos d’Estournel, loyalty is not to be taken lightly: it is what drives the estate’s dedicated teams and their families. It is this feeling of loyalty that has been bringing the same team of Spanish harvesters to Cos d’Estournel every year for the past five decades. And it is not unusual for a child to take his first steps alongside his father and grandfather on the hill of Cos, only to see his own son work there one day.

Vineyard Manager Michel Sementery is the perfect example of this dedication. After learning the trade from his father, a winegrower at Cos d’Estournel, and his uncle, one of the estate’s cellar masters, he himself watches over the very same vines amongst which he played as a child. This precious philosophy and spirit is something that he shares with his own children, Guillaume and Estelle. Each pursues his or her area of expertise with the same devotion to the estate: Guillaume works alongside his father in the vineyard while Estelle travels throughout Europe as Business Development Manager, promoting the estate’s values of Semper Fidelis far beyond the walls of Cos d’Estournel.

Semper Fidelis, forever loyal…
