On the road to the Médoc

In Bordeaux, the history of the wine industry can be traced back to the creamy-hued limestone buildings lining the Garonne riverfront, from the Chartrons district, where ships loaded with barrels would set off for the seas, to the voluptuous silhouette of the Cité du Vin, inaugurated in 2016, where visitors may partake in a modern, eclectic vision of wine.

Upon leaving Bordeaux, the sinewy roads leading to the Médoc embark visitors upon an unimaginable journey. The Route des Châteaux leaves indelible memories of magnificent edifices and gardens surrounded by meticulously tended grapevines, where nature and the hand of man express themselves in perfect harmony.

Further north, the majestic pagodas of Cos d’Estournel finally reveal themselves at a bend in the road. Singular and exotic, the home of the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe is a veritable palace entirely dedicated to winemaking. It does not leave indifferent.

An unforgettable journey, like a foray into the Far East, awaits. Visitors will discover the fascinating history of Cos d’Estournel’s founder Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, also known as “the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe,” the estate’s vineyard and its incomparable exposure, the diversity of its terroirs, the strikingly modern gravitational cellars tucked beneath the Asian architecture of the estate’s pagodas and finally, during an exclusive vertical tasting, the unique style of the wines of Cos d’Estournel.

After a visit to Cos d’Estournel, the temptation to venture onward is great. Just a few hundred meters further down the road lies the home of Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, now a chic country refuge.

A peaceful haven for visitors seeking a tranquil, cozy getaway, La Maison d’Estournel is the perfect place from where to further explore the Médoc region.
