A Myriad of Colors

ARTICLE -

Discreet yet Spellbinding

So many infinite variations of reds, golds, grays and creamy whites, in the wood, stone, steel and glass of the estate and in the silks, velvets and surprising objects in each room, for a perfectly orchestrated intermingling of hues.

At Cos d’Estournel, color is a discreet yet undeniable presence. First the visitor is greeted by the warm creamy hues of the stone facades, the russet cast of the chateau’s roof, the slate-gray shades of the estate’s trio of Pagodas and the ochre tones of the Agra stone used to decorate the parvis. All is surrounded by a forever-changing sea of vines, whose leaves are a soft, tender shade of green in spring and flamboyantly orange in autumn.

Then there are the colors that surround the wines of the estate: in the cellars built of wood and glass, somber hues play off transparency in myriad tones that contrast against the steel of the winemaking vats.

If one color were to stand out at Cos d’Estournel it would be red, the deep red that makes a discreet appearance on the bottle of the estate’s wines and in touches throughout, creating a perfect harmony overall.

Finally, the visitor is warmed by an abundance of colors in every conceivable hue: elegant, inviting silks, velvets, wall hangings and rugs decorate the Chartreuse and the Pagodas.

But if one color were to stand out, it would be red, a red whose depth resonates in so many different nuances. It is the deep red that makes a discreet appearance on the bottle of the estate’s wines and in touches throughout, creating a perfect harmony overall.

It is a red that mirrors the ceaselessly evolving hues of the estate’s wines, from the purplish hues of spirited young vintages with their share of enchantment and mystery to the bright garnet or tawny patina that is a sign of patience and aging, of the passing of time. But it is also a red that does not overshadow the other facets of the wines, the myriad aromas and flavors like a market stall overflowing with a wealth of delectable goods, a veritable kaleidoscope of fruits and spices . . .
